Have You Asked Yourself, “Why Do I Want To Lose Weight?”
Losing weight is one of the top 5 New Years Resolutions or Goals that women aspire to each year. And it’s also one of the biggest failures we experience. Why do you think that is? I feel mostly because we approach being overweight or obese like many things in life—we try to put a bandage on a wound that needs surgery.
When I talk to women (and have also been guilty of this myself) about why they want to lose weight “I want to be healthy” is usually the last reason stated. “I want to look good.” “I want to feel good about me.” I want to be able to buy nicer looking clothes.” “I want a boyfriend.” “My husband doesn’t look at me the same since I put on this weight.” “My husband wants me to lose weight.” “I’m tired of being fat!” Are the more popular reasons I hear and have also had myself. But I have an important question for you…”Have you asked yourself why you are overweight, or are you just jumping in to lose weight?
We need to take a look at, “Why we are overweight?” Is it because of overeating? If so, what is the root cause of our overeating? Why do we use food in a way that God had not intended for us to do? Why is it that we do not exercise the self control that Peter talks about in 2Peter 1: 5-8, when it comes to food? What is our true relationship with food? These are some good questions to ask ourselves and the Holy Spirit. Because until we can honestly look at the reasons for our love affair with food, going on a diet is our mere attempt at trying to put a bandage on something that needs much more attention.
How many of you did not reach last year’s goal for weight loss? Have you looked at why? Apart from looking at the “why” you are overweight, did you perhaps put unrealistic goals on yourself? Did losing those 30 – 50lbs mean that you would have to exercise 7 days a week, and you are one who barely exercises twice a week? Did it mean that you would have to deprive yourself for months? Did you really sit down and pray and think through a realistic life change for yourself or did you get caught up in the world’s way of doing things?
If losing weight is one of your New Years “Resolutions”, why not change it to a “goal” based on changing the way you are living your life. Set realistic small goals and check in each week with yourself to see how you are doing? Look at the spiritual, emotional and physical. The Spiritual part is—working on the root cause for your overeating. Emotionally—tracking how food and your emotions are intertwined. And Physically—looking at what you ate and how much exercise you got in for the week. Also how much sleep you had on a daily bases.
Tune in tomorrow for a couple of helpful ways to help you succeed in making changes for a healthy lifestyle that will be very beneficial for the long haul.

What a great blog to start the year off with, Ponnie! Losing weight is one of my goals for this year, but not one of my resolutions (yes, I know that's strange, but it's true!) - and it's difficult because of the job I do, but all the more reason to take it seriously! I look forward to reading more blogs & hopefully submitting a few too!
I have an orientation at my local gym at 7 am. because being severely obese is no picnic - it hurts, it's hard to find good, cheap clothing (Value Village) and regardless of the attempts to make it "okay" it is not attractive at all. So I do want to lose weight for all the reasons - health, attractiveness and just the feeling of getting this done. I've gone through the motions of weight loss, without the actions. Now it's time to put the pedal to the metal, and get healthy! Thanks Ponnie for the inspiration!
